I have a cockatiel that that has taken to screeching whenever I leave the room, or sometimes for no reason at all. he has food, water, a cuddle bone, toys but he'll just sqawk very loudly and in a piercing tone until I cover him up. How can I train him out of this?

  1. My cockatiel screeches too. It just means that he wants your attention. To stop this behavior you can talk to him everytime he screeches. Or walk back into the room and glare at him and say a firm no and walk out keep doing this until he gets it. Do not squirt him with water or yell at him, thus making him screech louder.

  2. He wants to go back to the rain forest.

  3. he loves you and he is bonded to you! get him a friend?

  4. Poor baby has separation anxiety.  My girl does that sometimes.  You could try darkening the room some & keeping it on the quiet side or play some music softly.  Here is a chat line for birdlovers.  Hopefully you'll connect with someone who'll be able to help you with.  http://members5.boardhost.com/ParadisePe...   They advertise that "our perch is your perch"....so, I hope they can help.      I would suggest just reassuring him with a whistle or two.  I got in the habit of whistling to my birds & it lets them know I'm home & seems to calm them down without me yelling up the stairs.  I live in a two family house & it wouldn't be cool to be waking up my landlord (who lives on the other floor) or bothering him by calling the names of 3 birds!  He may even mimic you, when he gets used to the sound of your whistle.  You could also try "kissy" sounds!  He just wants to be connected to you....if not by sight, sound will do.
