I just got a 12 week old male cockatiel 3 or 4 days ago... and i know its soon... but he has already settled in and he is attached to me when i get him out of his cage. But the whole time since hes been here, he has only made four or five peeps... why wont he sing or tweet or anything?? =[ and also, when i itch him on his little orange patches, he makes really weird noises. Is that ok?

I just really want him to make a lot of noise haha =] Please? what can i do to make him, more "lively"? =P

  1. Give him time.

He is used to being around other birds now you are his only companion.  Teach him to say I Love You by saying it to him many times a day.

  2. Try feeding him treats. Treats make birds happy, which than makes them sing. If that doesn't work, try putting on some music, or you can  try and sing to him.

  3. Jeeeezzzz! Give him a break.  3 or 4 days.  You are lucky you can even handle him.  Just give him some time.  It will be OK.  But I understand your anxiety.  Every time I get a new pet, I fret and fret also.  He will be fine.  And congratulations on your new friend

  4. What the person said is true, 3-4 days is a bit soon for the bird to be singing you an ear full already.

But just in case a month from now ur bird is still not singing, i wouldnt worry. Birds have personalities, some sing some dont. So dont worry. I would worry however if it isnt singing because of stress. You'll know your bird is stressed if its plucking its feathers, not eating. In case this happens, bring your bird to the vet and feed it very nutritious things (pellets, and fresh vegies) also make sure your bird is getting enough sleep (8-10 hours!). ALSO make sure your bird gets exercise and attention, they can get lonely just like us.

So, i wouldnt worry since it is too early to tell for your bird. But take advantage of his young age and start whistling your favorite tunes so he can start learning them. My bird always gets excited when I whistle.

  5. you can't make a bird do anything he doesn't want to do. he has to be comfortable in his surrounding to make and noise. i've had a tiel for ten years and he only makes noise when he hears my mom in the other room. other than that i almost forget he's there cuz he is so quiet. the key is to be patient. he will talk and make noise when he is ready. they are just like people. some are louder than others and some are quiet.
