My cocktail is bleeding from the vent (bottom area) how do I stop it?

My cockatiel is only 19 weeks old. She/he flys backwards and seem to always land on its tail feathers. A week ago I had to take her to the vet as she started bleeding at the base of her tail. We think this has happened when she landed (she does have her wings clipped - from the pet store). She was fine for 3 days but has now started bleeding again after flying backwards and landed hard on the floor. What do I do to stop it from bleeding in the future and how do I stop her from flying backwards???

  1. If she is bleeding from the vent she needs to go to the vet as she could have internal injuries.  If you see a cut or other wound on the vent itself you can apply firm but gentle pressure but otherwise she needs to go to the vet.        As far as flying backwards it soulds like her wings were clipped to short or too far in giving her not control when she trys to fly.  Not all petshops know what they are doing.  If your vet is an avian vet I would recommend having him/her clip the wings and/or teach you how to do it.

  2. Has your vet made any suggestions?

Here are a couple of websites that may help:

  3. Put some cornflour on it to stop the bleeding and get it to the vet as quick as you can.  Birds can't tolerate a lot of bloodloss as they don't have a lot of blood to start with.  You have to be careful about clipping wings, it sounds like a botch job if the bird is not able to fly at low level for a short distance.  It's important that the bird be able to escape a predator if it does get out.  Be sure to teach it something unique to say or whistle in case this happens so you can hear it if it manages to escape.  I've heard that they won't talk if they learn to whistle first.  This seems to be the case with mine, he mostly whistles, although he can rarely come out with a surprisingly clear peek-a-boo during play!
