It depends on what your company wants them to do and what business you are in, but typically IT will :

- help identify, manage the computers used by personnel including software licensing

- if you have a website and want to host it yourself, then the IT will be responsible for server upkeep and all applications used

- manage the network of the company

- manage the email systems of the company

- manage the technological requirements of the company from remote video conferencing, to telephone systems  

- help the company be informed about the latest technologies and evaluate these technologies the company requires

- create and manage your intranet system, if any

- create and manage databases used by the company, if any

- in some companies IT also covers web content development
