  1. Get a directional antenna and aim it at your room.  By default, the router creates a 360 degree bubble of signal around it.  Usually, half of this signal lands in the yard or garage and is useless.  The directional antenna focuses the signal's power in a cone shaped beam so it can go farther.

There are things called range extenders, but they don't really work, and they are expensive.

  2. I personally would hook up a cord from your downstairs router and hook it upto the computer upstairs. This made MY internet 5 times faster, and literally cause no lag.

If you have a laptop however, there is no hope but upgrading to a N+ Router, those are the best on the market. If that does not do the trick, then nothing wirelessly will. Make sure to use a password if you are using a wireless router, and change the channel to something like either 11 or 1. Using something like "Network Stumbler" (a program that detects wireless internets and their channels) can help you change to the correct channel. 2.5ghz wireless phones will also cause interference, as well as microwaves, the TV, etc.

    Good luck! =D

  3. Powerline adapters would be best solution, these send ethernet signal through eletricity ring main. Plug ethernet cable into one adapter plugged into a socket next to your router plug the other adapter into a socket in the room where you have your computer and then plug another ethernet cable from that adapter to your computer.

  4. You can buy a new antenna if your wifi card has an antenna sticking out. Here are some online.

Also if you have a cheap wireless card, then chances are it the card itself. Airlink (Generic Fry's brand) is completely terrible. If it is a cheap card, you are better off buying a new card. I would suggest linksys.

There is also the possible chance of a bad wifi router. I had a D-link that caused a lot of lag issue. Again, Linksys equipment help fix the problem. Also make sure the wifi band is 802.11g and not just  802.11b. 802.11b is quite old and doesn't have a great range.  802.11n is the latest but most likely your computer isn't equipped to handle that band nor is the standard completely standardized.

Lastly, if there is a lot of wifi routers around you (like at college apartments), the interference from them will cause lag. There are some changes you can do to help but they won't help as much as you think.
