My computer at work is running horribly slow. any ideas on how to fix that?

for example. i had typed my whole entire question before it showed up. i work in internet explorer a lot, and in the middle of something it just shuts down. it won't load a java addition to internet explorer, it just shuts that down as well. our network connection is slow, but mine is the worst. it's a dell computer - here's what it says: microsoft windows xp version 2002. service pack 2. intel R premium. 4CPU. 2.80 GHz, 2.79GHz, 512MB of RAM. Internet explorer version 6.0.2900.2180.

i can't do much because it's not my computer and i don't think i'm allowed to s***w with the settings, what can i do?
