  1. I'm not sure if virus makers would be going for the all important soundcard drivers. They'd be more interested in deleting core OS files. When you went for a re-install of OS, did you have any additional devices plugged in that did not come with the computer? Like a printer or a DSL modem with USB cables? If yes, then problems may occur. I think what you need to do is check the sound card in device manager. If it is there & enabled, try uninstalling & re-installing it. This problem can also occur if the codecs are lost. Try downloading & installing this player. Its 30Megs, mostly as it has all the codecs..http://download.mpcstar.com/achive/mpcst...

One more this, if you had a virus & you re-installed the OS Without formatting the Hard drive, only the OS files are reinstalled. Like your data, the virus is also safe on the computer.. I'd say burn your data on DVD's & follow these steps:

    0) Take out all the extra H/W that your computer did not come with, Printers, USB peripherals, etc.

    1) Format & recover the system. To format, either use the windows CD that came with the computer (boot with the CD in the drive, it should be picked up by default) or when booting when you see your computer logo, start tapping F10 This should take you to a recovery menu. If you have updated your system regularly & have the latest Service Packs, you may get a message ike the version of windows on the system is newer than what you are trying to install. Go ahead & install anyways.

    2) Install a good AV BEFORE you plug internet in.

    3) Update AV the FIRST thing when you go online.

    4) Enable windows Updates so that your computer has all the available patches. In fact I'd say after updating AV, go to windowsupdates.Microsoft.com & get ALL the updates.

    5) Now get a good Firewall if you have a always on internet connection.

    6) Get some good Anti Spyware/Malware too, Spybot "Search & Destroy" & "Ad-Aware" are what I use, they are good & they come free. Also get something like McAfee's Siteadvisor, which warns you which sites are known sites for sending spyware/malware/spammers.

& this is the AV I use: http://download1us.softpedia.com/dl/5737...

  2. Sounds like you still have a virus... you should go have a pro look at it. Sometimes the viruses are so advanced that the virus software doesn't even pick it up...

  3. You might have lost your Sound Manager. Or you're having a problem in your Sound Manager.

Check if your sound manager is running. Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del) if you see "soundman.exe" then it's running.

Or you can download Security Task Manager: http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/downlo...

If it's not then the virus must have deleted it, download it again here:

    http://www.download.com/Realtek-AC-97-WD...

If it is running but you still don't have sounds, then you might have a problem in registry or something.

Try download these softwares maybe they can repair it (I'm not sure if this works, I haven't tried this yet)

    Registry Booster: http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/regist...

(click INSTANT SCAN that will download the software)

    Glary Utilities 2.6:

    http://www.download.com/Glary-Utilities/...

Then the whole pc with anti-spyware

    Spybot: http://www.neuber.com/taskmanager/downlo...

Hope it will solve your problem.

If not, then you should go ask help to the Professionals or Computer Experts.
