Question:

My computer connects to my network wirelessly but IE doesn't go anywhere

I have Verizon DSL, and I have two computers that I want to connect to my network wirelessly. I have Westell wireless router from Verizon.

My older computer, which is Windows ME and uses Netgear wireless card, can connect to my network with WEP key, but when I bring up Internet Explorer, the page says "Internet Explorer cannot load the page". It does not go anywhere. The signal is strong, so I know there is nothing wrong with the router or internet service.

It connects to my neighbor's network without a problem.

How do I fix this?

Thank you!

  1. Unplug your router (and modem) for 10 seconds to reboot them.  Then reboot your computer(s).  This usually fixes it.

If you still can't connect, and you purchased the router yourself call the manufacturer.  They can help you get it working properly, if you just installed the router, you may need to set up "MAC Cloning" so your modem thinks it's the same computer you registered.

If the router was provided by your ISP (Internet Service Provider) call them and they will either send someone to fix it or help fix it over the phone.

  2. Try to do ping from the command prompt,

    ping 64.233.167.99

if you got an echo reply from google.com when you ping that IP it means you need to add a DNS server, or point you pc to use the router or OpenDNS ip.

  3. You might have a strong conection with your wireless router, but the router may not be connected properly to the internet.  Try rebooting the router and/or modem.  If they don't have an on/off switch, just unplug it, wait 5 seconds and plug it back in.

If you have a modem then a router, reboot the modem first then the router.

  4. Wifi signal and internet are not the same thing - you need to connect to the wireless, and then into the network. Find out how your neighbour set up his network and do the same! It's probably your router not connecting and giving your computer an IP address.

If you install a new firefox, and get the 'broadband' add-on, then you can do some cool diagnostics on your network and find out from there. Internet explorer (Especially in Windows ME) is a joke, you should retire it immediately! It's practically going to pull all/any available malware into your system!
