Question:

My computer has a lot of programs running, how can i check them?

My father said on Windows 95 there was a way to check what programs were running at any time, and we have XP now, and he hasn't had to check yet. I wanted to see waht was running, and possibly stop them, they're making my computer slow, how can i check?

Please help, it's appreciated.

  1. Task manager.

    Right click on the toolbar anywhere where there is a 'gap' and select 'Task manager' from the menu.

    Alternatively, CTRL+SHIFT+ESC is a much simpler shortcut to launching Task Manager.

    Essentially you'll be wanting to look at the processes view and looking for processes started by the user's account that they aren't familiar with.

    Do be careful ending these processes though as a lot of critical system services have very vague sounding names and ending them can cause system locks or loss of data.

  3. Windows Task Manager. Access it by holding Ctrl+Alt+Delete.

    If you would like to check what's sucking up your memory go to the Processes tab. It shows you the memory usage of all running programs.

    To check what is the memory usage of an opened program in the Applications tab, just right click it and select Go To Process. This way you don't have to manually find the process.
