Obviously we have lost the XP installation discs. If I were to buy a new XP package, could this be utilised to enter my computer and access my information?

  1. initially boot from the XP cd, go to the repair / recovery console options, type LOGON to access the Windows installation, type CHKDSK /R to check for disk errors and repair, might take a while depending on the size of the disk.

  2. if your windows is genuine try this.

when you boot-up hold down F10 or F11.(or tap them repeatedly)

this should take you to a option to either re-install windows fully, which you would loose everything but have a clean installation, or re-install the OS but leave your personal files in tact.

If its a newer PC they usually have the installation disk hidden on a recovery partition on the hard drive. If not then you would have to get a disk from somewhere, boot-up from that and repair the installation.

  3. If its an old PC why not melt the hard drive to save your personal data and buy a new one?

  4. you would need to know first if you h/drive is gone before trying to install anything.

  5. You would need to boot from the new cd, and then try to select a repair install. This will normally work unless the drive has failed.
