Question:

My computer is not reading certain CD's?

I want to put a CD onto iTunes, but the computer is not reading it. I've looked at everything and its all working well, the CD spins, the light comes on, the computer says the drive works fine, etc.

But on certain CD's, the drive doesn't read them. I've gone through pages of Yahoo Answers, Google, and Ask, but can't find my solution.

The CD's that didn't work, but do now, oddly, are:

Sweet's Greatest Hits

Weezer 'My Name is Jonas'

All American Rejects 'Move Along'

Those are only some of the CD's that *didn't* work, but they do now.

The CD I am currently trying to put in is Death Cab for Cutie's 'Narrow Stairs'.

I opened iTunes, Windows Media Player, and all my other players.

The CD doesn't work.

Can someone please help me out?

  1. Indy it doesn't matter who is on the CD or what is on the CD, for the computer they are just pits & bumps.. 0's & 1's buddy...I guess the CD's are scratched.. Thats the reason you have those problems.. It "might" work sometimes & other times it won't.. Some say the Cd's work if you clean them with toothpaste, lens cleaner, Coke & even Toilet Cleaner.. I haven't tried any of those so I wouldn't know..All I would say is once you have them on iPod or in iTunes, do make a copy on a DVD & store it someplace safe. Nowadays you can even store your entire albums online. Check for online storage spaces.. Some are available free & some are paid, but not too expensive.. Try them..

  2. Some CDs manufactured between 2001 and 2005 were corrupted with a kind of "copy protection" that rendered them useless (or nearly useless) on PCs but still allowed them to be used on (most) audio CD players.

This protection was quickly discontinued following a class action suit against Sony in 2005, but some of these CDs may still be in circulation. Look on the CD packaging for a copy protection notice or disclaimer (this may be in very small print). If you find you have one of these bad CDs, you should be able to return it to the manufacturer and get it exchanged for a good one.

  3. I would first ask if they are all original Cds or were they burned from a computer?

If so the CD may be a CD-R CD-RW ect and your CD player may not be able to read that CD format.  Check your owner's manual of your CD player.

If the are original see below:

It most likely is a scratch cd.  One simple thing you can do is get a cloth that cleans glasses and wet the cd.  Use a circular motion to clean the CD.  let dry and place into CD player.  I would suspect your CD play my be dirty as well.  You can also get a CD player cleaner from any Electronic store.
