  1. why not re-boot the hard-drive

  2. You have a problem, but you can tackle the problem if you wish.

You need to download "stinger" and you can get it here:

    http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.a...

Once you have Stinger downloaded, you can turn off your modem (disconnect from the Internet).  At this point, turn off system restore (or else the viruses will be returned to the system).

Now run cleandisk (or a utility to empty all your temporary Internet files and all other 'junk' that has accumulated).

Next, run Stinger (which you downloaded).  Be sure and read the site the URL points you to.  There are different versions of Stinger.  Stinger is a very specialized anti-virus.  It only seeks and destroys viruses that corrupt your own anti-virus.  If Stinger turns up any hits (cleans up or deletes any files), you will know that your anti-virus is toast and will have to be uninstalled.

After running Stinger, reboot your computer.  Perhaps safe mode might be in order.  At this point, I have run Stinger again to make sure that the system is free of anything that will corrupt my normal anti-virus.  If Stinger shows that the system is clean (no "hits"), then you can re-install your own anti-virus software.  That is if Stinger did previously show hits.  If you have a lot of viruses running around on your pc, I guarantee that Stinger will come up with one or more hits - in which case you'd have to un-install your anti-virus and, at this point, re-install your anti-virus.

After re-installing your own anti-virus, run a complete system scan.  Granted, your anti-virus won't be up-to-date at this point as you are still not connected to the Internet, but clean the system as best you can.

After your anti-virus shows a clean system, reconnect to the Internet (turn on your modem) and download the updates for your anti-virus.  Then run another complete system scan.

If it shows up clean, you should be good to go.  At this point, you can turn system restore back on.

Remember to update your anti-virus *daily* (unless you get on the Internet less often; in that case, every time you get on the Internet).  Old protection is better than none, but not being up-to-date is running a big risk.

You should also have an anti-malware program to protect from programs that may not be viruses, but could open a back door to let viruses in.

Please do *not* even think about getting on the Internet without a decent firewall.  All bets are off if you do.  Without a firewall, most computers will be hit within several seconds if they are on a broadband connection.

    Good luck!

    Best regards,

    Jim
