My computer is slow and lags almost every time?

my computer lags like crazy its an old Compaq wit only 16 gig i tried defraingmenting it and disk cleanup lie everyday and i only have 3 and a half left how do i know which things i hold delete or make it faster

Hold up!!! 16 gigs of memory how much RAM?? i think its time u upgraded to a new computer,i did i had only 18 gigs on my Xp i sill use it to stash music and programs but my vista is my eye candy with 500 gigs
