OK so yeah...my computer keeps shutting down and this hasn't happened before. I have my firewall up and everything. It just recently started today. I have a laptop and my battery is charged because I always have it plugged into the wall. My computer will stay on for about 10-20 minutes and then it shuts off by itself. When I boot it back up nothing comes up to where my computer suspects it shut off and it doesn't pop up for options of safe mode. I tried scanning but then my computer shut off before it could finish. Could this be a trogan or a virus? Please help :) thanks

  1. There is a program called CCleaner.  It is donation ware.  Before you run it you must press options and protect ALL of the cookies that you have that you want to keep.  I wen through the list four times before I was satisfied.  Once those were protected, I ran the program.  It gets rid of more malware than any other program with which I am familiar and I am familiar with a lot of them.  If that helps, then great.

If it does not help then your problem could be overheating.  My ex-wife destroyed her first laptop by using it on her lap (big) without a cooler in between the computer and her lap.  The fan didn't work properly because if couldn't vent into her lap and the motherboard was fried, thus turning her laptop into an expensive paperweight.  Your laptop may shut down rather than letting you fry the motherboard.  If it is properly vented, this is probably not the problem, but the accumulation of dust into the vent and fan could cause overheating.  Feel the bottom of your laptop for temperature after shutdown.

  2. Have you opened any .exe files or .bat files recently? I've heard of .bat and .exe viruses that cause the computer tos hut down at random times. Try using System Restore, and restore it  to before the shut downs startd happening.

  3. Try to use system restore and registry cleaner like regedit.

Also you can scan the computer for virus using norton 2008, If the problem format it with a back up of your data of course

  4. only having FIREWALL install doesn't means ur pc is secured....

    install updated antivirus software

    best antivirus software is nod32

    get it from www.eset.com

  5. It's usually caused by overheating, faulty power supply, or a bad RAM stick. Troubleshoot the least expensive possibilities first, before buying any new hardware. try cleaning the fans, and check all the cable connections inside the case. Try using a registry cleaner like RegSupreme.

  6. I suspect it could be that your laptop is overheating but check your event viewer for clues as to why it shutdown. I use two rubber feet from an old computer case to elivate the back end of my laptop to allow air flow underneath keeping the laptop cooler.  You might have a large lint ball blocking air flow in your laptop as well. I repaired a person laptop once (HP model) and the entire heat sync inside was clogged by a palm sized lint ball.

To check your event viewer, click on the Start button and select Control Panels.  Click on Administrator Tools in the Control Panels and then select event viewer.  If you are using Vista, you have to click on Windows logs to see the event logs once you are in Event Viewer.  Look in the System log for shutdown / startup info.
