My computer says tcp/ip network transport is not installed?

my computers internet will not work and i keep getting an error that my tcp/ip network transport is not installed...how can i fix this, do i need to uninstall and reinstall it because the uninstall button is greyed out in network connections. also system restore will not fix it. i know it is not my wireless card. i recently updated my avast virus protector and it corrupted some of my files i gues. im runing xp home some one help me please!

  1. the problem might be the tcp/ip protocol might be corrupted..

    to ensure that your protocols are working fine..

    open command prompt and type

    ping 127.0.0.1 then you should get the reply and success rate as 100%

    if this doesnt work out.. it means that your protocols are corrupted.. and you need to reinstall the internet explorer.

    i suggest you after pinging.. try to install internet explorer 6.0
