My computer screen is dark?

ok, i was leaning over my laptop and now my computer screen is tinted dark, i can barely read any text. i must of pressed a button or something. please tell me what to do without any of that tech talk. thank you

When that happened on my laptop my backlight on the screen was dead and the replacement was several hundred dollars (this was a model from 2003) so I sold it to a guy and bought a new desktop.
