  1. Yea I had to run chkdsk first also. After that it worked ok. Just make sure to disable screen saver and close any open programs or windows.

  2. depending on you OS.  You may not have enough space free on the disk to run defrag

From the defrag help file in Windows XP

"Ensure that your disk has at least 15% free space

A volume must have at least 15% free space for Disk Defragmenter to completely and adequately defragment it. Disk Defragmenter uses this space as a sorting area for file fragments. If a volume has less than 15% free space, Disk Defragmenter will only partially defragment it. To increase the free space on a volume, delete unneeded files or move them to another disk. "

  3. CHKDSK is used to check the file system for errors to ensure file safety and integrity. If there is an error in the file system, the volume will be marked as 'dirty' and the defragmenter will not defragment the volume for reasons of safety until the error is fixed. CHKDSK will fix the error.

You can run CHKDSK from the command line or from My Computer, as explained here:

    Hope this helps

  4. close all programs and then unplug the computer for over 30 seconds. the Chkdisk will start automatically as windows boots up. some software will reboot to affect the changes.

  5. Reboot your computer.  When the blue screen pops up asking to check your disk for errors, let it.
