  1. you may be infected...virus can stop updates...

  2. Scan with Malwarebytes, its FREE

  3. I have a similar issue with AVG on an XP laptop. I found that installing a load of updates due for XP, AVG was more willing to update. I am increasingly frustrated with it tho.

  4. You might have a trojan that has changed the DNS server settings in registry.

  5. might be a trojan

  6. Do you have enough bandwidth for the antiviruses to update. Keep all downloads off while downloading updates.

Also, Its not good to  have two Antiviruses installed remove one of them and try. And make sure the firewall is off during updates. It could be also a virus which is making it not to update scan your computer and do a spyware scan too.

  7. try a free online scan:

    or

Have you updated windows ? A lot of AV's won't run unless you have SP2

    or

Has the computer ever had Norton on ?

Did you run the removal tool ?

  8. to get the updates it needs to be connected to the internet so it can download the updates from the company's server

  9. If you're using AVG 7.5 still, it won't update anymore. You need to go to AVG 8. If you are using AVG 8, then as mentioned above, you may have a virus or something stopping the updates from going through. You can try any of the following free, online scans and make sure your system is clean of any infections. If it comes back clear, try downloading and installing either one or the other ofyour AV programs again and reinstalling and see if it help.

I use all 3 of those, and would suggest you run at least 2 different ones. If you do have something on your system, if one misses it, then the other will pick it up and remove it.

    Good luck..
