I have a Dell Inspiron 500 that i bought somewhere close to 5 or 6 months ago. The other night i was playing on it....nothing out of the ordinary and then i turned off the monitor when i went to bed. I didnt turn off the actual computer just the monitor. I have my computer on a surge protecter but when i woke up it was off. When I went to turn it on it stopped at the bootup screen. (with the blue Dell logo) and wouldnt go past that. it wont let me press f2 or f12 or anything. the guy at Best Buy said it sounds like a hardware problem but before i take it in to him i have a question...

If i put the operating systems disk in and reload windows vista will it erase everything on my hard drive or just reload vista?

  1. i dont know but maybe the computer isnt charged!!!!

  2. Don't wipe your hard drive until you find out what the problem is.  It also sounds like a hardware problem to me and the last thing you want to do is do anything to a computer under warrenty.  If you bought this brand new 5-6 months ago, take it in to them and demand they fix it under the warrenty.  If necessary, get them to replace the computer.

If I were you, don't do a thing to the computer yourself as long as it is under the warrenty.  Best Buy and Dell are responsible, so make them live up to the warrenty.

  3. If you reboot your computer back to manufacturers configurations yes  you will lose everything that is stored on your hard drive. I also have a Dell with the same problem except mine won't boot at all. So download onto a cd or flash drive anything that you don't want to lose. That way you can save it for later and re download it back on  your computer. Good luck.
