  1. Try a ping or trace route test to see where it fails.

    1. Open up a command prompt (Start/run type in "cmd" then hit ok).

    2. Type "ping www.cnn.com"  (URL) this is going to a well known site and you should get positive results back.  If not, then next step is to see where it fails.

    3. Try this first, type "ipconfig /flushdns" this erase the cache files and then try connecting again.

    4. If the URL still does not resolve to an ip address then you have a problem with the dsn service on your router (not forwarding request).  Check with the manual notes on your router (you didn't mention what type you had).

Lastly if all else fails then you may have to reset your router back to the day you got it.  Most routers have a reset button and all you need to do is reenter the information to get back online.

In regards to your other question.  First try the uninstall option in Add/Remove Programs.  Then go to norton site, they have a utility that will uninstall anything that was left behind.

  2. In answer to your last question.

Download AVG but don't install it. Disconnect from the internet. Uninstall Norton. Reboot of necessary. Click on the AVG download and install AVG. You can then reconnect to the internet

  3. That's odd, I'd call Symantec and find out why your internet won't work after uninstalling...

Btw, why don't you want 360?  It does virus, firewall, and can back up your data...

  4. Did you install AVG before you uninstalled Norton? If yes, then uninstall them both, reboot, try to connect, if it works then reinstall AVG.

  5. It is not advisable to have 2 antivirus/firewall/ programs running at the same time.  It is best to uninstall one and keep the other.

I have 8.0 on my dekstops and I have to wait for Mcaffee to run out (paid for the one that came with my Vista laptop before 8.0 came out...) and love 8.0.  It is a bit different than the 7 version but free is free.

I recommend that you also get the firewall called. Zonealarm.  It's free also.
