  1. stress and bordeom are the 2 MAIN causes of feather plucking, if hes out at least 2 hours a day and has a LARGE cage with LOTS of toys (just because thier little birds does not mean they can go in a tiny finch cage) then she needs to take him to the vets for blood wirk...

because if its not stress of bordeom its usually an adrenal problem.

  2. its bored or sexually deprived. Try giving it something to play with.

  3. plucking feathers means either its board out of its mind (get more toys and maybe another bird friend!!) or its distressed and scared. so just give it lots of yoys and get it a friend and it should stop

  4. It could be feather mites or that he is bored, dust out his cage with special powder from a avian specialists and treat the bird too and if he then continues it's out of frustration and boredom.Try giving him some toys or pieces of wood he can destruct.

  5. Birds do this when they are:

    1. Sick

    2. Bored

    3. Stressed

    4. Trying to get your attention

I suggest taking it to an avian vet for a checkup. If it is constantly plucking its feathers, its a bad sign. It might have a skin irritation, or it may have mites. Blow on its feathers and see if you can see any small white or red flea type of bugs on the bird. If it has that, then its mites. If you dont see any, then it could be boredom, stress, or skin irritation.

If you take it to an avian vet, they will put a little round plastic dish around its neck to prevent it from plucking its feathers further. Thats the best advice anyone here can offer you, is to take it to an avian vet before it injures its self.

Dont worry, its a very common problem. Tell your cousin to make sure that the cage that the bird is in, is streilized. Boiling water mixed with salt and stirred is a good sterilizer for birds cages. Dont use any house hold detergents to clean the birds cage out or it may cause an allergic reaction to the bird.

Hope this helps you and good luck !! =]

  6. try playing with it more. or getting it a toy (mirrors are fun for birds).

it may be molting. but if it goes on for a while then more attention is in need.

  7. I agree with Ash and Gems. The main causes of a bird plucking its feathers, are

    1 Boredom

    2 Stress

    3 Sickness

    4 Attention seeking

Check for mites, and consider getting it a friend or a mate, and even some new toys to prevent it from getting boerd and agitated.

The best advice has already been given here. Take it to an avian vet for a checkup as soon as you can. Best of luck to you and your cousins bird!
