  1. I am surprised that you don't speak any German if they are your cousins! Your parents really missed out on raising you bilingual.

Kids in Germany start usually in 3rd or 5th Grade to learn English. So depending on how old they are they really might know more than you would think.

I am sure you guys will be able to communicate (even with hand & feet) and you will have lots of fun.

  2. if they say they speak little english its probably alot more than you think. europeans have higher standards as far as foreign languages go. and they will pick up alot here too. maybe you could learn some german? try doing things that involve not so much conversation... if youre of age maybe clubs? or movies...

if youre having trouble trying to get a point across hand motions help. or if you know more simple words that could lead up to the main subject of what youre trying to say...

i have cousins from across the globe, too. its hard at first, but it gets easier.

    good luck!

  3. i had the same problem what you do is play games like monoply (i did that) or something you dont need to communicate much in

  4. I had this problem too. We played a lot of charades... It was hysterical. I recommend picture cards and a small translation book. Have a great visit.

p.s. I think you'll be surprised what their idea of a small amount is.
