Question:

My credit card info was stolen by a virus - What do I need to do?

One night my boyfriend used my old laptop to surf a p**n web site. Not long afterwards, I started getting a weird popup for antivirus software that wouldn't go away. My computer crashed after I tried to delete some infected files.

Two days later, I checked my credit card statement and found a charge $30 from a p**n web site! I'm pretty sure it was the virus and not him - I never gave him access to any of my credit cards.

I contacted Transunion and put a fraud alert on my card - what else do I need to do? Help!!!

  1. Its different possibilities really. It could be a key logger and its read your card details from any site and then its someone else using it to look at p**n.

Or like you say a virus. Follow these instructions

    1, booting to safe mode

    http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.s...

    2, Spybot

    http://www.safer-networking.org/it/downl...

Download update and THEN immunizes. Do a full scan

    3, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware:

    http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Ant...

Download, install, update and select Quick Scan.

Remove all infections that it finds after scan

4, Analyze and clean your PC http://www.ccleaner.com/download

    Also do the registry scan.

5, My computer>Add/remove programs install Spybot as malwarebites will take over the rest

6, Make sure you have a firewall Comodo

http://www.comodo.com/ AND real time virus protection

    AVG

    http://free.avg.com/ww.download?prd=afe

Spybot and malware bites are good for removing but AVG will give you the real time protection

If its still there then discontinue card use and email me.

And finally I'm going to say you are really kinda daft. If you ever look at any p**n on a PC that you use for online card transactions your asking for your identity to be stolen. NEVER NEVER use any personal info eg shopping banking emailing on a PC with explicit uses. keep it all separate and stay safe

  2. Call your credit card company and cancel your cretit card(s) that have been stolen from the virus, then, if your laptop is still working, download a virus protection software and scan it.

  3. my bet is your boyfriend has used your credit card details for , what the site has reported to be 'age verification purposes only'. is it 'interweb' or perhaps 'web-jtcharge'. i bet he cancelled the free 1 day memberships as instructed and assumed he wouldnt be charged.

dont blame the guy for the charge the companies assume that you will delete all correspondence from the companies then charge your card it is a fraudulent website and no doubt catches a lot of suckers this way.

cancel your card. although ask him if he did read the small print and cancel the memberships. if he has you will probably find the charges will not apply to your next bill.

you might also want to ridicule his gross stupidity in this matter but in all honesty the sites do say that you will NEVER be charged.

    good luck to you.

ps I could be totally wrong but a virus is highly unlikely.

  4. run this

    http://www.download.com/SUPERAntiSpyware...

  5. I would run as many virus and spyware scans as you can. AVG, Spybot search and destroy, Ad-Aware, super anti-spyware,...etc. Those are all free and ones that I would recommend.

Once those have cleaned your system you should be safe again.

  6. Contact your credit card company right away, they will cancel your current number and issue you a new one.

And tell the BF to stop downloading p**n sites.

  7. Call your bank that issued the credit card and report it (should be a toll-free number on the back)

I'd also be really surprised if it wasn't your bf who used the card somehow. Do you store that info on your pc? If so stop.
