My crown just fell off, what should i do

My crown just fell like 20 minutes ago, it was off the side of teeth. I've checked if I have any holes around it and I couldn't find any, but I want to double check with my dentist first.

I just have a question how much is usually putting it back in - cost? (I still have the crown) is the crown suppose to be dry?

and last question what happens if you don't put the crown back in, will anything happen at all?

I've had it for like 4-5 years in on tooth for now, and I'm probably not going to go the dentist for another 2 days. Any suggestions of what I should do while it happens.

  1. You need to alert the dentist, ASAP. I don't know how much it'll cost, but I'm guessing it'll be expensive if you don't have insurance. I guess just try not to chew anything with that tooth in the mean time.

  2. Call your dentist and schedule an appt as soon as possible. Given the age of the crown, there will likely be a nominal fee for recementing it. But more importantly, you want the dentist to determine why it came off. Did the cement just weaken and let go or is something else going on, such as new decay in the tooth under the crown. You need to have it checked.

Leaving it off won't hurt it for a short period, such as the two days you mention. So long as you are not in pain, it will likely be fine. But you don't want to leave it off for any extended amounts of time. That tooth stump has no enamel so it will attract bacteria and develop cavities much more quickly than a normal tooth. Brush the tooth stump (so long as it's not hurting) and keep it clean. Keep the gum tissues around that tooth clean, keep flossing it. And be careful not to chew on that side. That little stump isn't very strong and could break off quite easily. So be mindful of it whenever you eat.

If you need to put it on for cosmetic reasons, try just pushing it back on the tooth, sometimes it will have enough retention of it's own to stay on. You can stop by your drug store and ask the pharmacist for a temporary filling material. Put some of that in the crown and stick the crown back on the tooth.

    Good luck!
