my dads addicted to gambling and its affecting the whole family.. we dont have any casinos in our hometown and he has months where he's okay but sometimes he'll go on trips to diff. places to meet old friends and he'll somehow end up at a casino gambling all his money away. I'm 17 and it's been going on for pretty much my whole life and probably his too. I've tried talking to him but that honestly does NOTHING, I've cried and told him how much it hurts me when he does it. and how i feel like he cares about gambling more than his family, but still... nothing. It affects my mom too, every time he leaves it makes her angry and we both don't know what to do. We tried to get him professional help once but he refused it and said he would stop, but he hasn't. Has anyone experienced this problem and have any ideas on what i can do to help. thanks.

  1. He sounds like a friend of mine.  I would get a group of people together and have an intervention.  Maybe it will strike home that everyone cares.  If not, then maybe your mom has to take his money and hide it.  She must also lay down the law and threaten to leave him.  Possibly.....have the family leave for a week to make a statement.  Ignore him until he comes to grips with the problem?

718-352-1671  This is the number to gambler's anonymous.  They will have good answers for you.

  2. I dont have experiencein this area, but id like to suggest that it is posibel to become a professional gambler, such that the tables are flipped on the house and the player expects to win money, this may provide a solution to the problem without you having to do much work other than buy him a book and insist he read it through.

Blackjack and poker are the two games that can be exploited so that the player is expecting to win money.  I dont have experience in poker but i listed some links for blackjack that are very informitive, he will need to still buy a book in the end though.

I gamble on average about 15 hours per week, im sure thats far more than he has, and i have never had to have the problem of losing money in the past two years i have been playing.  Have him check out this link http://www.qfit.com/blackjack.htm  as well as http://www.hitorstand.net to practice

    A Compulsive Gambler?

Compulsive gambling is a symptom of an emotional illness, characterized by low self-esteem, immaturity, instability and obsessive behavior. Because compulsive gambling is an insidious and baffling illness, some adults have difficulty deciding if they were affected by compulsive gambling during childhood. The following questions may help you to determine whether compulsive gambling affected your childhood or present life.

    Do you obsess about money?

Did family activities revolve around gambling events? (sports, cards, lottery, racetracks, etc.)

Have you ever been missing money?

Were you forced to form an alliance with one parent against another?

Did you parents use you as a sounding board for their marriage?

Are you afraid to be alone with the gambling parent?

Do you feel anxious when the phone rings, mail comes or doorbell rings?

Do you feel responsible for the unhappiness in your home?

Do you confuse pity with love?

Have you had problems with your own compulsive behavior?

Do you feel more like the parent than the child?

Are you unable to remember all or parts of your childhood?

Do you care for others easily, but find it difficult to care for yourself?

Do you find it difficult to identify and express your feelings?

Do you have trouble with intimate relationships?

Do you lie when it would be just as easy to tell the truth?

Do you feel more alive in the midst of a crisis?

Do you think more money would solve your problems?

If you answered yes to some or all of these questions, Gam-Anon may be for you. Gam-anon is a fellowship for families, relatives and close friends who live and have lived with the gambling problem.
