Of what answers were given to you so far, I only saw two answers that I would trust.  I have dialup myself, and my average download speed is around 5KB/s and sometimes, depending on the time of day and the traffic on a particular website, the download speed would be anywhere from 1.5KB/s to over 7KB/s.

One thing that is a missconception about internet speed is the dialup download speed.  Your modem may be a 56.6 KBps modem, but you only download at 3 - 6 KBps.  This is normal and actually pretty good for dialup.

Broadband ISDN is a bit better at >/=68 KBps, DSL will be even faster at >/= 128KBps, and Cable, I believe is ./= 512 KBps, while the super connections used by businesses, the T1, T2, T3, and T4 speeds go much faster... like MB/s.

Imagine a 56.6 KB/s modem being a straw.  A ISDN would be a straw about twice the size, thus allowing more information through.  A DSL would be a pipe up to about 3 inches in diameter.  Cable would be a PVC pipe say about 5 - 6 inches.  A T1 and up would be like a drainage pipe in the size of around 2+ feet.

the problem with download speeds is that the isps give the speeds in kilobits per second which is 56kbps, the download box on your pc gives the speed in kilobytes per second (KBps). there are 8 kilobits in a kilobyte so you need to multiply the speed given in the download box by 8 to get your line speed in kilobits per secone, you are getting 6 kilobytes ps so times 8 = 48kilobits ps, this is an average speed for dial up, when i was on dial up i was lucky to get this speed. i hope you understand what i am saying
