My dad didnt like the phone he got..so when it came time for my upgrade...?

i told him to pick out a phone that he likes..and take that..and i can take his phone that he is unhappy with (the voyager)..I just got the phone that i upgraded to for my dad today, and i wanted to know if i have to activate the new phone under my number for a certain amount of time since its MY upgrade..or can i just activate it for a few hours..and then activate his voyager tonight for myself..instead of waiting a certain amount of time before i can do that.

depends.  if u have an at&t or tmobile, you can juss switch the sim out and you'll be able to still have you contacts and same phone number
