  4. Well if your into Japanese-y stuff then it will be hello kitty stuff, although you maybe a little too old for that. Or it can be one of those cat statues with the moving arm, some a Japanese (I think) folk-law.

Things I have as souvenirs, are chopsticks, Tibetan incense/pray flags,  pottery with Chinese characters, a set of old Chinese coins (most likely fake), statue of the Pearl TV tower, painted Xinjaing drums.

  5. Chopsticks!!

Having their origins in China, chopsticks are used in many Asian countries. The first chopsticks were made from bone and jade. In the Spring and Autumn period, copper and iron chopsticks came into being.

In ancient times the rich used jade or gold chopsticks to display their wealth. Many kings and emperors used silver chopsticks to see if their food was poisoned.

Chopsticks are traditionally placed in bride's dowries , for "Chopsticks" in Chinese is pronounced "kuaizi", which sounds like "soon to get a son."

Many foreign friends used chopsticks when they visited China. Nixon also used chopsticks at the welcoming banquet in his honor . As soon as he left his table, a foreign diplomat grabbed his chopsticks as historic souvenir .

Chopsticks are the main table utensils in China. Chinese children starts with a spoon but will adapt to chopsticks as early as when he just turns one. As a gift chopsticks symbolize straightforwardness, because of its shape. Chinese chopsticks don't have pointed tip, unlike the Japanese style that is refined to pick out the bones for their main diet, fish. Chinese chopsticks are mostly of bamboo, but today there are more and more wooden ones and plastic ones.

Foreigners are not expected to use chopsticks proficiently, but if they do, they will give a mighty impression. Therefore before you go to China, go to the local Chinese restaurant, if not to find authentic Chinese food, at least you can practice the use of chopsticks. If in your first meal in China you don't have to use chopsticks, then if you still can't handle the two sticks to pick up a big shrimp in your tenth meal, you show your incompetence in learning and the willingness to learn.

Well, Are you ready to visit China? Still don't know how to use chopsticks. Let me show you:

    1) Rest the end of the lower chopstick in the V of your thumb and forefinger. Support the chopstick with the little finger and the ring finger.

    2) Hold the upper chopstick as if it were a pencil, held between your middle finger and index finger, and anchored with your thumb.

    3) Make sure the tips of the chopsticks are always even, and the same length - it is impossible to use the chopsticks effectively if the tip of one stick protrudes beyond the other.

    4) When picking up food, the lower chopstick should remain still - only the upper chopstick should pivot, with the thumb as axis.
