i want him to buy the porsche but hes looking at the CLK class benz

I would recommend the Porsche not just for performance but for reliability and ownership costs.

M-B will lose their value very quickly every time.  On a CLK, for instance, a 3-4 year old model will cost up to $15-20k less.  The Porsche (Cayman I presume, as it is the most compatible with the CLK) will be a lot more fun to drive, will certainly be more reliable, and your father won't take as much of a hit when he goes to sell it.

I agree with you that a Porsche would be better. But like what the first poster said, it's not your money. If driving a Mercedes makes him happy, let him buy one.

Neither car is very reliable. But the Porsche is more of a drivers' car, with performance and handling superiority while the Mercedes is more of a "show" car to impress friends who know nothing about cars.
