    most quarter horses do well

    most ponies don't do well

but myshetland pony has never foundered or anything and he's ona 5 acre pasture plus hay and grain.. he's 10

  2. Quarter Horses.

  3. quarter horses do well on pasture living.

  4. Paints

  5. If you dad is looking at a farm, then he could most likely buy it...just tell him that you like it and think it's a good investment. (hopefully it is!) You're lucky, the day my dad would ever consider looking at farms to buy would be the day pigs fly!

In essence, any breed could thrive on pasture living, but if you want an easy-going, relaxed, good tempered horse I'd suggest an American Quarter Horse.

You can get an AQHA for relatively low prices anywhere.

Your 'one' horse may get a little lonely, so you might want to consider a companion horse or animal.

Just make sure the grass/pasture/fencing is in good condition prior to putting any horses out. Check for poisonous plants and keep your horse(s) on regular warming schedules, fly-spray them at least daily or supply fly masks/fly sheets. Always watch for signs of illness, and perhaps bring your horse inside at night to be safe.

  6. any breed of horse loves pasture, its their natural habitat.

  7. any and all horses can do very well and thrive in pastures.  ITs all about common sense in how you care for them  ( which admittedly is in short suply these days).

As long as a horse has access to shelter such as a run in shed,  water and good grass, they do very nicely

We've kept our horses outside this way for 40 years.  The only thing we do is make sure they have places with no bugs to stand.. and if its bitterly cold in the winter we have rugs and blankets for out in the field at night.

  8. quarter horses & paints

just tell him you love it and wish he would buy it !! Tell him you'll help with chores around the farm too!

  9. Depends on what state you live in. There are breeds that do better in colder climate & then some do better in warmer cilmates. But all horses can be raised on pasture. But you will have to read on how to correctly feed pasture horses. It is not as easy as just letting them go. You have to rotate to make sure on pasture doesn't get over grazed & things like that. Good luck! I have 151 acres & it is HARD work!!!!! It is harder than you are thinking!!!!!!

Susi~~~~ Gotta love them Morgans!!!!!! I wouldn't trde them for anything!!! They work our ranch greatly!!!!! Mine get real fuzzy too!!!! LOL

  10. AmericanMadeMorgans is right,  some breeds do better in colder  climates than others.  I pastured my Morgan with a couple of Arabians.  The Arabs didn't get too much of a coat in winter, but the Morgan would get a coat like a Shetland Pony.  Another thing to think about is how a horse reacts if it's in a tight spot on the farm.  My Morgan caught his shoe in a wire fence.  He got down and it was an hour or so before he was found.  We cut him out, rolled him over, and finally got him up.  Because a Morgan generally has a lot of "horse sense", he kept his wits about him and didn't try to fight us while we helped him.   People in the barn who owned various other breeds were astonished at his calmness and sense.  It helps a lot in such situations to have a calm horse who won't lash out.

AMM-yeah, no horse is fuzzier in the wintertime than a Morgan!  Must be those New England winter genes!!!

  11. naturally all horses do well on pasture, but if they are on pasture most of the time make sure you worm them about every 6 weeks or worm them every day with Strongid C2X dayly wormer.(it goes in thier food)
