My dad says i cant eat brownies, pies, and pretzels. im a vegetarian. is he right?

he says that those products have animal shortening..

in the ingrediants whats the name for the animal shortening?

is it riboflavin?

  1. Well, it depends on if you are vegitarian or vegan.  If you are simply vegitarian than yes, you can eat those.  If you are vegan, however, then you wouldn't want to eat those becuase they do contain animal bi-products... along with nearly everything else in the grocery store.  

    Being vegan is a way of life that takes commitment.  It means really looking into everything you buy and eat to ensure that no animal was involved at all (to the best of our knowledge, anyway).  This also means that you need to know what the chemical terms are for many animal bi-products such as gelatin, glucose, carmine, etc.  Here's a good website to learn more:

  2. The best pie crusts are made with lard, and butter is a second best. But cheap commercial pies are made with vegetable oils of various kinds. Check the ingredients.

    Brownies are usually made with butter, but I suppose you could find some that are not.

    As for pretzels, there are so many different kinds it's impossible to make a general statement.

  3. The names for animal fats are lard, beef tallow and suet.  You find beef tallow in many highly processed baked goods.  Lard is a higher end product only found in more expensive pastries.  Check the ingredients.

    Butter, suet & lard are common names you will find for animal shortening on ingredient labels.

  6. All those items require some type of fat/oil to cook.  Commercial products normally use the least expensive & that would be animal fat.  If you look hard you can find pretzels containing only vegetable oils.

  7. Certain pies may contain lard, but most contain vegetable shortening. You should check the ingredients. In a restaurant, ask.

    Riboflavin is a water soluble B vitamin present in both plant and animal products.  

  8. Sweetie just read the ingredients. Hardly anyone uses lard anymore. If you eat eggs and dairy like most vegetarians you can eat most deserts. One ingredient to watch for is gelatin, it's what Jello, and marshmallows are made of. It comes from cow hoofs.

They may be made with animal shortening, but they may be made with plant shortening.  Pretzels and brownies are very unlikely to be made with animal shortening, pie crust slightly more likely.  You need to look for ingredients like lard, tallow or beef fat on the ingredient lists.  Riboflavin is a b vitamin.

    The people who are saying it's OK for vegetarians to eat lard are misinformed.  Vegetarians don't eat dead animals and lard is a slaughter byproduct.  Vegetarians eat foods from *living* animals, like dairy and eggs, that vegans don't eat.  But neither eats foods from slaughtered animals.



  11. Yes, if you are a vegan, there is a difference. Vegetarians do not eat meat while vegans do not eat anything that comes from an animal.

    i.e milk, cheese, honey, etc.

  12. Vegetarians can eat almost all desserts. You can't eat gelatin though, and some pudding.

    Vegans can't because most of them has milk and eggs.

    You can always just buy vegan desserts at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods.
