  1. I'm sorry that you have to experience that. I'm sure your dad is trying to steer you in a direction by which he believes is a brighter future for you. However, you have to do what's best for you. After all, it's your life and future. I think you should sit down with your dad and let him know that you do value his opinion but you want to make your own choices. I hope it all work out for you. Have a great day!

  2. why dont you sit him down and ask him why he wants you to be a science student so badly? then explain to him that perhaps science isnt your strong point and that you want to succeed in life and make him proud, and you can only do that  by doing the things that you love or your good at and thats the arts. parents only want the best for you dont take it that he hates you, he just perhaps wants to see you do well and studying sicence is how he knows how.

    dont worry about it.

  3. I think I can empathise with your position - I come from an Iranian background where typically, parents either expect you to be a doctor or an engineer... However, it's your choice. Your future is yours - and although it's not really the ideal situation to fall out with your dad, you have to explain to him that it's what you want to do.

    It's more about being successful in the choices you make yourself than doing something because you feel like you have to and potentially messing up your chances of a happy future. You should have a big chat with him and just explain it.

  4. Well, I met with a student like this. His father wanted him to be a pharmacist and he was obviously a philosopher. He did enjoy math but you could just tell when you see him he is into philosophy. With that said, sit down with him and tell him this is the best decision for you. Or you can appease him by taking a couple science classes your first year if you go to a general university and major in art. you have to take a couple science anyway. Are you bad a science? or so so? or good? In any case,  it would be a waste of time for you to do something you are so so at and don't like or even take something that you are good at but don't like. Things get harder in college and I have seen some great students in high school crack with chemistry and things like that. I have seen so so student rise because they really wanted to be in chemistry. If you get so so grades your freshmen year or even fail then it would be a waste of time and money which your father wouldn't like either.

    You should research some of the great careers in art. It isn't always starving artist.

    Here are some that our fine arts department grads have gotten to do:

    1. illustrator & visual effects artist (worked on star trek)

    2.  professional medical and biological illustrator (all of those books science majors read have to be drawn by someone.

    3. Bank Note designer

    4. Computer graphics artist

    5. retail stores art director etc.

    There are many things one can do with a degree in art if angled correctly. Maybe if you tell him that he will feel safer with you doing art. Also, he is your dad. He can't be made forever. He will eventually be happy that you are doing something you love.

  5. Tell him it is your future your choice and if he does hate you hopefully not Tell him he is a heartless git {NO OFFENCE}
