  1. The bill should go to your dad. Also, even if his employer does not offer benefits he may get his own insurance coverage. I have Humana as a personal policy. They are more reliable anyhow than an employer funded program because my rates are not affected by someone elses health and I don't have to change companies every year. Check out some of these. They won't back date and pay for his last hospitalization and you may have problems with prior medical and having a gap in coverage.

  2. There are no programs these days for legals. The bills will roll in sporadically for each service rendered and at different times, starting in one week after release. They will come in his name and ask for payment in full. You can delay payment by waiting for same bill to come 2nd or 3rd time. But  there will be penalties if you go beyond a final notice. You can contact billing for payment options, but it will not be a $1.00 "good faith" fee as one here stated. You can send $50 right away to hold them off though, until you decide a course of action. They send to a bill collection agency after 2 months, and then it can get ugly.Social Services will not help you.You have to do this on your own.

  3. Talk to the social services department of the hospital.

They will help you if they can.

You may be surprised to learn that aid isn't easy to get, and your dad may have to pay the bill in installments if they let him.

  4. He gets the bill, there is state insurance that is out there.

Otherwise I would wait to see what the balance is and then you only have to pay $1.00 a month to show good faith. If they lean on you call the free lawyers you can find them in the phone book.

  5. Contact your hospital's billing department. Most hospitals offer some sort of low-income program that would reduce or even eliminate your dad's bills. If he doesn't qualify, the hospital will still take payments and will not turn you in for collections as long as you make a payment each month.

  6. Why will YOU get the bill?

  7. Unless your Dad is YOUR DEPENDANT, the bill will go to your Dad, not you.
