  1. Space Maintainers for Premature Tooth Loss

Baby teeth (dentists call them primary or deciduous teeth) aren't just for chewing. Each one also acts as a guide for the permanent tooth that replaces it. If a primary tooth is lost too early, the permanent tooth loses its guide and can drift or erupt incorrectly into the mouth. Neighboring teeth also can move or tilt into the space, so the permanent tooth can't come in.

Primary teeth can be lost too early for several reasons:

They can be knocked out in a fall or other accident.

Extensive decay can require that a primary tooth be extracted.

Primary teeth can be missing at birth.

Some diseases or conditions can contribute to early tooth loss.

If your child loses a primary tooth before the permanent tooth is ready to come in, or if the permanent tooth is missing, your dentist may decide to use a space maintainer. The maintainer keeps the space open until the permanent tooth comes in.

  2. The spacer is a good idea because it will leave the space open for the new tooth to grow in.

My son has a spacer, he's 4 and cracked a tooth eating a aw carrot, go figure!

When he got his spacer, it took a couple days to get used to it, now he's a chewing champ!!

  3. i am not a medical expert but i don't htink they are neccessary.

my son hasn't lost a tooth just yet.  however,  my sisters kid lost 4 already and never had to get a space maintaner.

  4. My son is 6yrs old (in Kindergarten).  He had his tooth pulled, and his dentist told me he did not need a spacer.  He explained that some dentist would place a spacer, but it is not necessary and the insurance would not cover it.  I had since then taken him to another dentist, and they told me the same.

  5. Depends on how long they think it'll be until the grown up tooth comes in. My daughter had a tooth pulled at 6 (she broke it biting down on a burger at Burger King, of all crazy things!) They didn't use a spacer for her, and her grown up tooth is just starting to poke through now. (She'll be 8 in July) This wasn't a front tooth, but not quite a molar either. It was like a side tooth. Either way, good luck!
