My 5 yr old has been constantly wiping her mouth now for about a month. It gets to the point that she will do it four or five times in a row. When i ask her why she is doing it she says i dont know. Is this a sign of OCD or is this just a stage ? I dont know if i should take her to see someone or with im just being crazy, I need advise though because it is starting to get raw where she wipes it.

  1. Just to go on a little bit more with the girls who's sister has turettes.  All kids sometimes just have a certain tick.  Doesn't mean they have turettes but my son has a habit of l*****g his lips constantly.  I have asked his Dr. about it and he said it's normal its just his little tick so to speak.  Well he has to go to an occupational therapist for some delays with his hands and I asked her about it b/c I noticed he does it more when he is writing.  She said it is his thing he does when it is hard for him.  The more he licks then the more difficult the task at hand is.  Try to take note of when she is wiping her mouth.  Does she do it more at certain times than others.  Is she conscious of herself doing it. Or is this something she does subconsciously. Does she feel that something is on them that she needs to get off or b/c something could be hurting like a nerve in the lips or something else.  Once you know that this wiping is done at certain times and not others or if there is no ryhme or rythm then go to the Dr. and explain what you have been seeing.

  2. Put a little vaseline on it and if it gets raw use some bacitracin or neosporin. The next time you go to the doctor be sure to ask about it. If she really is hurting herself then go specifically for that.

    Hope she gets better soon.

  3. Could be OCD. If you can;t find the cause of her anxiety then yes she should speak to someone else. Taking her to a professional though, your likely first advice will be medications. If that is not what you want you need to research on your own first and remain adamant in your position as well as active in finding other solutions. #1 though would be why is she feeling anxious? Find the cause before you treat the symptom.

  4. It is worth it for your own comfort to go see the right doctor for your daughter.  You won't get that comfort here.

  5. i know exactaly how your feeling. i have a sister who started doing things they call "ticks" at the age of two. she strated off with simple things such as, sniffing her nose repeatedly over and over again. then, she would develope a new tick and start jerking her head to the side 3-4 times in a row. every few weeks, she delevoped a new tick. her latest "habit" (as we call them in our household) is jerking her knees together. you can see bruises from slamming her knees together so hard. finall, we took her to a doctor and found out she had turette syndrome. the doctor said i may go away with time, so we just let it be. then, things got worse. so we took her back to the doctor and found out she has OCD. she then asks the same question repeatedly. the doctor perscribed medication and she is now doing fine. OCD and turette syndrome is like an urge. for instance, when you have to go to the restroom, you have that urge that doesnt go away until you use the bathroom. and until, your daughter wipes her mouth, it doesnt feel better. you may want to see a doctor and see if she does have a type of OCD. hope i helped :)

  6. If it is OCD, it's better to have it diagnosed sooner rather than later.  It could be something as simple as dry mouth, but it's better to get it checked and rule out anything more serious.

  7. Is she taking any sort of medication?  Because there are certain ones that will cause ticks.

  8. I think it's a bad habit and nothing to be concerned about.  Let's see as a child, I constantly bit my lip (I'd make it bleed), bit my nails (so short it hurt!), chewed my shirt, and licked my lips (they were always chapped).  I grew out of it.  She's 5...kids just do these things...
