My daughter has made some giant strides educationally lately and her reading is becoming very good, I just wondered if she is allowed to take driving test, or does syndrome disqualify her. Thank you. Terry. She is eleven now.

  1. FAS won't necessarily preclude her from driving or living a normal life - it depends on the amount of brain damage and to what area of the brain, as it is this that impairs some functions.

  2. If she is able to pass all the steps.

    Take written test for permit

    take and pass driver's education

    Pass written test

and take and pass the driving test there is no reason that she couldn't legally drive like anyone else.

They cannot discriminate based on a disability, only if she does not demonstrate the skills necessary to drive safely.

  3. talk to the DMV.

  4. She should be able to drive if she can pass the written and driving test then it shouldn't be a problem. We have a teacher that works in our center with fetal alcohol syndrome and she drives to work and does everything the rest of the staff does, it sometimes just takes her a little bit longer to think in situations. Good luck to your daughter

  5. There is no legal reason to hold her back from driving. Other factors that come into play for fetal alcohol children are impulse control and attention. Then it becomes a safety issue, not a legal issue. As a parent, that is up to you to decide. The safety of your daughter and other drivers need to be considered. If she can attend to all of the factors on the road and can control impulses and has normal intelligence, there is no reason that she can't drive.
