a sippy cup, but she is only 5 months old! Has anyone else had to do this and did you have any luck. what brand or kind did you use, or do they have a kind that is easier for younger babies? Thank you in advance.

  1. I don't understand why changing her to a sippy cup is going to help her..i would try a different kind of formula

  2. My son had severe acid reflux and the best bottle I found for him was the Dr. Brown bottles. There are a lot of parts to it, but it is worth it so they don't get sick as much. Also, what kind of formula is she on? Has he checked her for milk allergies? My son did best on the Parent's Choice soy formula, than even the more expensive soy ones.

  3. If it was from breastfeeding, your doctor was wrong to tell you to do formula. They have medicine for babies to help keep the milk down, first. Second, did they check her for Acid Reflux? My friend's baby went through this exact thing, and that's what they found.

Is it that she's sucking the bottle too hard? Its kind of vague in your Q. You could switch her to soy formula. My husband's mom had to do that.

Try feeding her only a little bit at a time. Like, give her a 2ouncer, when she finishes, make more, and she'll have time to let things settle until you give her more. This might help.

Lastly, if the Doc wants you to give her a sippy cup, they're making the suggestion from what they know. Its not a bad thing. People have given their kids sippy cups this early (friends of friends that I know), and their kids were fine.

I think you can try it out, and if its difficult, try out all the other wonderful advice you're getting. DR's give you guidelines and suggestions, remember that, they're not the law. (With the exceptions of shots if you want your kids to attend public school and daycare)

Also, there's that formula that has - i can't remember the name, but its broken down in an even simpler form, so you're baby doesn't have to digest it as much.

Sounds like its that she's getting too much, or she's got a digestive problem of sorts. Did the DR check for digestive problems?

  4. My daughter did not do well with the FIRST formula we gave her, but did great with the second....I would try changing her formula before you tried the sippi cup - Best of LUck

Both formulas we used were Enfamil.....

  5. I've cup fed (real cup) a new born and a slightly older baby.  I am reasonably sure she didn't mean a sippy cup as this makes a baby drink even faster.  When using a real cup you put the liquid up to the baby's lip and they lap and suck the milk generally more slowly.

    How's her weight gain overall?

Does she seem to be in pain?

Honestly if the spitting up isn't causing pain or weight loss there's not a great deal of reason to treat it.  Usually the first treatment for reflux (formula fed) is to feed half as much twice as often, keep baby upright during feeds and for 30 minutes after.

  6. You need to pay attention to her and make sure the spitting up is simple gas. Does she cry afterwards? It is uncommon in girls but there some babies may require surgery to correct certain defects that cause this. Also, reflux. Or GERD may be to blame. My son was not diagnosed with this till he has ulcers in his throat and lost 2 pounds.  But if its just that she is swallowing wrong, then a sippy cup wont help. Try Dr. Browns brad bottles, or Born Free brand, they worked wonders for my son. Also, when you do start her on a sippy cup, I recommend the Born Free brand, it was the only one my son would use at first.  Also, you can thicken her formula with rice cereal, She will need a larger nipple if you do this, as sucking too hard also causes her to swallow air.  Enfamil makes a formula that is already thickened with rice starch if you prefer.  It may just be that her current formula doesnt agree with her, you can try sensitive or gentle ease. Good luck! If she is throwing up right after she eats it may be an allergic reaction.

  7. I would give a bottle because milk will come out of a sippy cup a lot faster than a bottle and it would make her be sick even more if she glugs it down too fast.

My son was 12 months old before he had a sippy cup and we used the avent ones because we tried all of the others and he wouldn't drink from them.

I hope she is better soon.
