  2. Yes, try the Orton-gillingham multisensory approach.

    http://www.orton-gillingham.com

click on reading phonics and spelling.

I use this at home with my 7 yr old PDD.NOS/asperger's son.  If she is working on identifying letters and sound the Get ready for the code workbooks for 6.35 each with levels a, b, and c, or if she is doing cvc words the Explode the code books level 1 for 7.15 each.  My son is working on level 2 blends, he is going into first grade and is about grade level.  Also the Kumon workbooks are good for fine motor and math, you can get these at amazon.  Also available at amazon are the BOB books that break things down into little bits, we have all levels of these.  Also handwriting without tears series is good if fine motor is an issue.

  3. I bet there are parent support groups in your area, even if you are not in the US.  I would seek one out.  Those parents will probably have tons of helpful advice... as they have dealt with what you have to face.  I'm sure they will also have educational / developmental resources to help you.

I have a Downs Syndrome niece and she is the most special person I've ever known.  Since having her in my life, I've come to realize it's us "normal" people who are the truly handicapped ones.
