Question:

My daughter has a large white patch of hair? (pic)?

It's right on the top of her head. She's had it since birth (she's 4 now). I know it's caused by a lack of pigment in the hair follicle. Does it have a name, how common is it, is it hereditary, and will it be there for the rest of her life?

I kind of like it! It's the first thing people notice about her and she always gets a lot of attention because of it, but I'm kinda worried about what will happen when she starts school. I wouldn't want anyone to make fun of her about it.

Thanks!

Here's a pic of her with her Grandma. (She's on the right.)

  1. The white patch is fairly common. I went to school with 2 cousins who both had it. One directly in front. It encompassed her entire bangs and she had dark brown hair. The other had a white patch on one side that she covered with other hair and her part. She was blonde so it wasn't as noticeable.  Kids get picked on even if they are "normal" looking. I wouldn't be too worried about it and just address it when it happens.

  2. Oh she's beautiful !!! Yeah, it's a birth mark... Just leave it alone.. Not much you can do about it..

  3. im a hairdresser and i have seen this on a few people and yes it can be permanant although hair changes as the hormones in the body change so she may lose it around puberty but then again maybe not...if she starts getting made fun of for it i would just teach her that different is special and when she gets a little older they have mascaras and many semi permanant ways to cover up things....i know of one lady who has one and she gets it permanently colored every four weeks and i know another lady who just tries to blend hers with highlights...i dont know the technical name lol but she call hers bertha!

  4. Aw its cute! If it gives her problems once shes in school just dye that part but personally i think people will be ok with it.

  5. don't post pics of your child online -freaks can find her this way.  we all have something unique about us.  leave her alone and she'll figure out how to deal with it.

  6. Its actually a birth mark...and yes, it will always be like that!! I think its very cute too!!!  I knew someone growing up, where her and all her siblings had it in the exact same place!!!

  7. Unfortunately it will probably be there to stay.  I started getting grey hair at about 6 and now im 21 and probably about 30% of my hiar is now is grey. I dye it so nobody knows, but when I was younger I use to get picked on alot for it. And it is hereditary. I'm not really sure how common it is, but I've only ever met one other person with the same problem as me.

  8. I'm not sure what it is either, I just wanted to comment and tell you I really like it! It looks like little blonde highlights

  9. i think its very becoming of her :) it looks like she has blonde highlights :)
