My daughter started w/ a rash on upper back, now it has spread to stomach, back, cheeks, legs, and arms. I called the doctor he said it might be 5th disease. She has no fever, she had a cold a week ago, the doc said if it gets worse, or it starts to bother her to bring her in. I'm very concerned. any suggestions?

  1. I know how it feels. She will be fine. If it does start to bother her put some lotion on the rash. If it is still bothering her after 2 days of having the lotion on then i would take her to the doctor.

  2. "I'm very concerned."  So take her to the doctor.

  3. Although 5th disease is common and has hit several children at several schools this year I lean towards thinking that it is not 5th because 5th usually starts on the face with the "slapped" look on the cheeks. You should see your pediatrician immediately because it could be a ringworm type fungus (do you have cats?) or even impetigo which does spread and remember....both are highly contagious . All can be treated with topicals and antibiotics and should be diagnosed quickly before infection sets in. Such a rash should be seen by a Dr. without delay. Good Luck!

  4. 5ths disease is really common in children and in adults.. its not really a big deal

Most people can treat this  at home with rest, fluids, and pain relievers. Fifth disease usually goes away after a few weeks.

  5. In most cases having a rash means that the child HAD some type of virus and that is how it will end...I would check with the doctor if it doesn't go away in a couple of days OR if any other symptoms present themselves!!

  6. 5th disease usually starts on the face.  The cheeks look like they have been slapped.

I'm really surprised that your doctor diagnosed this over the phone.  Most doctors will insist that you make an appointment or go to a 24 hour non emergency clinic to have it evaluated.

Make sure you follow up and don't accept a phone diagnosis.

Do not wait for a few weeks to see a doctor, make an appointment immediately.
