my daughter has been told, she can not continue her education in 6th form because she got low grades in 2 out of 3 AS exams (1st year of A levels) she is free to resit them at another college or sixth form, but not the one she has spent the last 6 years at. Are schools allowed to just kick you out for this reason? my daughter wants to resit she is not happy with her results, I'M CONFUSED! any advice welcome :)

  1. well they can unfortunatly kick you out, coz they dont think your daughter will improve probably and let the 6th form down in terms of grades and u need at least 2 or 3 to get into university. unless u argue or do something no other mother would do....write a letter to whom this may concern.

  2. Of course they can.  Its ok though, she can go to college next year and do the year again, maybe choose different courses.  She'll be fine, I failed my first year too, but I'm better off for it!

  3. when i was at school in 6th form you had to get a minimum grade at AS or you were told you either had to resit the 1st year or you wouldn't be welcome to come back for A2 so I think it's pretty common x x

  4. First of all, it is not the end of the world.  It does seem rather bad of the school to chuck her out just because of poor grades when she is happy to re-sit the exams.  If this is not because of bad behaviour or bad attendance - not through illness but because she chose not to go in, then I don't think it is much of a sixth form.

It might be worth looking at other sixth forms in the area and the local college where she could either try to re-sit or do the AS levels again - and maybe with different subjects.  You do get an extra year  if you need it now so she will be able to do this with no problems at all.  She might find she prefers college as she does not have to waste her time with all the school things - assemblies, general studies etc. but will just be studying the subjects she has chosen.

  5. I would advise you to make an appointment for you and your daughter to talk with the head of the sixth form to find out why they will not let her back - e.g. are her results due to low attendance, not completing assignments,  lack of understanding of the subjects she has chosen, or other reasons. Could she resit the whole year? Or maybe re-do the year, but with different choice of subjects? Has she any idea of a career and what qualifications she needs to pursue that career? Maybe a talk with your local Connexions/ Careers office would help? Sometimes in the heat of receiving results communications are misunderstood and you need to talk things over.

If you don't get a satisfactory response from the head of the sixth form and your daughter is adamant that she wants to continue at the same school, try a letter to the Chair of Governors.

  6. Back when I was at college a few years ago, that would have NEVER been allowed. The lecturers would help you in anyway possible, and you felt wanted; like an adult.

  7. If she got bad grades, then may be sitting exams is not her thing, There is always a two year btec which is only course work based and can be another root in going to university. There a chance in doing btec national diploma worth 3 A levels and also a possible A level on the side gaining more points. Because its only course work there is no exam at the end.  This can also give people work experience and can have a choice of going into the industry or going on to higher education.
