Question:

My daughter has goofy eyes?

My family doctor suggests that my 3-yr-old daughter should see a ophthalmologist (eye doc) but I don't see why? Her eye sometimes wanders off, but it's only SOMETIMES... Doesn't seem to be a permanent threat... Anyone have this with their child? What did you/they experience? Did it involve surgery? (That's my main concern.)

  1. Technically she should have had an eye exam by and eye doctor before now. A wandering eye can cause children many problems in life. It is not something that you can just put off. You do not want her reading or learning affected by it at all. Really. Go to the ophthalmologist and let them give you their opinion. Muscle imbalances can be fixed with glasses and simple surgeries usually and the younger it is taken care of the less visual difficulty she will have later. Really. Don't delay this.

  2. If her eye is wandering sometimes at the age of 3, if not corrected by the age of six she could have very bad vision in that eye.

There are a few things which can cause a wandering eye a few which involve surgery. Surgery on eyes now is very safe and straight forward and has a tiny chance of any problems occuring as a result

A wandering eye can also be caused by weakend muscles in the eye which the solution for is wearing a patch over her good eye for say 2 hours a day while she watches tv to effectively strain the other eye and build up the eye muscles - stopping the wandering eye.

Take her to the opthalmologist - she really should have had her eyes tested before now - but at least he can diagnose her if there is anything to diagnose then you can make an imformed decision on what to do.

    hope that helps!

  3. Definitely need to see an Ophthalmologist. A "wandering eye" can cause your child to not fully develop her visual system. Getting surgery to straighten or correct the wandering eye is not the only fix but it may be necessary for surgery to be done. See an Ophthalmologist and get your kid taken care of.
