  1. Herpessimplex keratitis on average, takes about two weeks to get over the attack. However, the organism is still there and never goes away. It is an oppurtunistic bug and will infect again, usually in times of stress like a cold, etc. That is why it is called a cold sore ulcer. Be sure that a competent eye doctor treats any red eyes in the future because a lot of common eye drops can make this condition worse and cause scarring, etc. Steroid drops would be the biggest offender.
