She is one of the oldest in her class(shes 5) and is finding the work they do too easy. She has started not wanting to go to school, saying its too babyish. We talked to her teacher about this and her teacher agreed she is way ahead of the other kids but that there is nothing she can do because in her school they wont move kids up a class,i was hoping someone would give me a web address or link to a site so i can help her with this at home.

thanks in advance.

  1. My sisters daughter had the same problema nd her teacher got her work to do from the next class up...she stayed in her own class but they provided more challenging work.

See the head about it if the teacher wont help....

  2. My Daughter has been ahead of her class since preschool and what the teaches done for her was give her extra things to do like help the other kids and got her work to do from the year 1 class because i demanded the teachers to give her extra work and to give her extra activities to do or i was going to  bring in extra work for her to do, Another thing you can do is when she is at home do some extra math, reading, writing and spelling with her,

  3. Ask the teacher for extra activities she can do when she finishes her tasks at school.  Like being a buddy to another child who needs help is a positive thing that they enjoy.  She should have home readers, if she completes them quickly then join her up to the library and let her choose her own and read to you each week.  Don't even think about  putting her ahead.  School gets real at about 3rd grade.  That's when I knew I did the right thing by starting my smart (not gifted) daughter a yearish late.  She not only is an A student but she has the maturity needed.  She is confident and well liked by her friends, younger grades and teachers and the principal.

  4. I'd put her in music lessons or something similar that she can grow with over time. Her progress will be determined by her own ability and desire rather than her age. It will stimulate her desire to learn. Teaching her first grade work in kindergarten won't really give her any long lasting advantage. By the time kids are in high school, the early readers aren't any better off than the ones who took a little longer.

  5. I had the exact same problem with my son.. now age 8. He was private schooled for 5 years and then through kindergarden. I then sent him to a public school. And now.. i have a problem. He is advanced, i spoke to the guidence councelor and they agreed with his teacher that he was to be given extra spelling words, different reading assignments etc. He now writes book reports and knows he is gifted and loves going to school. He does algebra already. BUT.. yes there is a but, be careful, even though they get bored, they will get to far ahead of themselves and get bored once again. You must get together with his councelor, there are programs to help children that are advanced. Dont move your child or push for that option only because you want them to grow with their peers. Keep them a child for as long as you can. They can challenge them in school and dont let them tell you any different. Good luck on this one because it is not easy to have a child that is ahead of their learning capabilities. YOU must keep up with them also.
