How can i get my 9 month old to stop throwing her head and body back into an arch. She does this when we hold her and especially when we need to put her down. She never cries and she's not throwing a tantrum, she's just doing it. Maybe she's upset but we don't want her to hurt herself. Does anyone else's baby do this and what the safest way to get her to stop. We usually lay her down on a pillow for her heads sake.

  1. What it is is reflux.  GERD-gastroesophogeal reflux disease.  Speak to her pediatrician about her arching.  When she arches does she straighten out her legs at the same time?

  2. get her a bouncer she's just having fun and hold tight when she does it on you

the bouncer should get it out of her system since she will have something to bounce in

  3. She will keep doing it if you always provide a pillow for her.  If she needs more attention, love and touch from you, give it to her.  Get a back pack for her so that she can be held longer.  Whenever you must put her down turn her around so that her back is toward you.  That way when she throws herself, it is against your body (make sure she does not head butt you).  Or, bending at the knees, and keeping you back straight, go all the way down to the floor with her before you move her away from your body.  If she then throws herself, help her go slowly to the floor.  Then stand up.  She can then kick and scream and have a proper tantrum.  Keep a good sense of humor, your going to need it.

  4. It's a phase. Once she's more mobile, she will get worse, lol, until you feel comfortable letting her knock her head a bit. My daughter used to do that all the time and I was always afraid she was gonna bump her head. I got sick of it, so when she was a bit older, we'd just put her down close to the floor so she would bump it a little bit. Then came a day when she was sitting and she threw herself all the way back like 3 or 4 times(she never got a bump or anything, they have hard heads, lol) and she was on carpeting. And she hasn't done it since. Experience is the best teacher, lol. Just don't encourage her, start telling her no a little bit so she'll learn the meaning.

    Good luck!
