As we are from Australia I'm not really sure what kinds of clothing she will need and how cold it actually gets, we want to make sure she has everything she will need for a 2 week stay. If anyone has visited there in December and has some advice it would be much appreciated.

  1. She'd probably need a light jacket. Half sleeved shirts an short sleeved. Capri's and Shorts. And thin sweaters. She can also pack Jeans as an optional choice.

  2. I was born and live in Japan.

It depends on where she's travelling but in Tokyo, it's usually snowy and really cold in December. You need to wear a sweater under a thick coat.I guess the same in Kyoto. Hokkaido, the northern city of Japan is crazy cold I haven't experienced. I hope your daughter has a blast here in Japan!

  3. No one's mentioned hats yet.  Hats are great.  Knitted ones.

In winter I wear two pairs of socks (on my feet).

Waterproof shoes too, for if there's water on the ground.  At least something beyond textile sports shoes.

Beyond clothes; bring cash in yen and don't bother with travellers checks.

Small koalas and kangaroos to give away... Japanese love small gifts.

A few photo's of home to show hosts.

    iPod.

    Vegemite.

  4. well its not winter yet so it will be hot dress in normal clothes shorts shirts ect

  5. Imagine historical coldest temp in Melbourne or Hobart in Winter. It may snowstorm someplace in Japan. Long sleeves, jakets, Jeans, overcoats, sweaters, gloves, boots are all must.

  6. The average temperature around December is about 10 degrees C.  Snowfall is possible, but not an everyday occurrence.  The one thing that makes it tough is the cold wind.  I suggest to have a type of jacket that has a removable inside fleece layer and a wind/rain/snow protective outer layer.  This is most common in ski/snowboard jackets.  The removable inside layer gives you options.  I also would suggest long thermal underwear, this helps with the coldest days and nights.  Wool socks also provide good warmth.  Last but not least, gloves.

  7. December is winter.  In the Tokyo region plan on cold and either rain or possibly snow.  Southern Japan cold and rain, Northern Japan cold and snow.

  8. It's about 5-10 deg Celsius in Tokyo.

It does get cold, but warmer than London and certainly not freezing like Chicago.

There is occasional snowfall, but doesn't stay on the ground that much.

Other major cities are not too different, Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Nagoya.

If you have normal warm clothing, like a coat, sweater, scarf/muffler, gloves, you should be set.  Bring a warm, but light coat/sweater.  Fluffy ones adds too much to the luggage.

If you go to the mountain areas like Nagano, or to the northern part like Sapporo, then it gets really cold.  Way below freezing.
