She has not started to do competitons or test yet. What's the difference between tests and competitions, and dancing, please give me a clear explanation of what I should expect to happen next when she gets better.

This is all confusing to me since I have not practiced this sport myself. I'm new to this.

I have some info from the club's documents they give me every year, but I'm still confused. It's like they can never give you a clear answer...they just confuse me more.

What are the different types of competitions or tests, or dance styles you can get into once you start private lessons? If you go in one type of competition, can you change into one other type as you like, or you have to choose what you want to concentrate on once and stay there. And then start over in the other types if you want to change...I don't know if I'm making sense, that's why I'm asking this question!!

Please help! confused, very confused! Thanks!

  1. Testing is how you move up levals for competitions. If you're in the US, it's Pre Preliminary, Preliminary, Pre Juvenile, Juvenile, Intermediate, Novice, Junior, and Senior(those are the ones you see on tv). For tests, you have to pass moves - which is like different types of footwork to show your technique - and then you can take freestyle tests - which are the jump and spin programs. The freestyle is what will actually get you to move up the level.

You do not have to take a test to start competing. Your daughter can compete on the no test level(at least that's what it's called in the US but there is something like it in every country). That way, you can enjoy competing without passing the tests. It is good for beginners and when you're first starting out.

Talk to your daughters coach about taking her first test and he/she will be able to help you get through the whole process. Good Luck!!
