the best gift to give children or people of all ages are books. if she likes to read, question her on what kinds of books that she likes. reading is a good thing to get children doing more of. here are some series for ones her age:

I would ask her what she wants. I'm sure at 10, she has quite the list. Buy her something suited to her taste; whether it's Barbies, clothes, jewelry, music, etc.

Cell phone.   My daughter started the middle school (5th grade through 8th grade.   I was not happy about the extreme age/maturity level.)    I feel more comfortable with her taking the phone to school to leave in her pocket or locker and can call me if something is happening or if I need to pick her up.    If she's responsible, add her to your existing plan or if you are concerned about it, buy a prepaid phone and load minutes onto it whenever necessary so that if it's stolen you won't be stuck with a huge phone bill.

MP3 player or, if she has one already, a gift card for free song downloads.  

Clothing.    You could have a girls night out where the two of you go to dinner and on a shopping spree.     Nice pajamas, fluffy robe and slippers, nail polish, smelly lotions.

Jewelry.    Earrings, bracelets, necklaces.   They all seem to like jewelry.

If she's artistic, some grown up art supplies.    Nice paint brushes & paints and canvas for painting.     Sketch pads and pencils.   Books about art.  

My daughter & her friends like High School Musical and Hannah Montana still but they don't want to wear any of the clothing.       They are of the opinion that those items are for little kids.     So, before you buy those things, you might see what she thinks about them .  

Littlest Pet Shop figuerines.    The special editions are really "in" right now.    I don't know that they really play with them a whole lot, but most young girls collect them.
