I've tried to find info on the web about how to splatter paint...some sites say to water down the paint, some say to use toothbrushes, etc. If you've done this type of 'painting' before, we would certainly welcome any suggestions and helpful hints you could give us!

  1. I've never done it, and wouldn't.  Yes, how are you going to keep the ceiling protected?  Yes, if you don't water the paint down you will have rough walls.  Don't forget to cover the whole floor, or it, too, will be splattered.

    Not a good idea.

  2. I've only done it on small projects but I can tell you if the paint isn't thinned enough it will add texture to the walls.  If you have little or no texture on the walls, when you paint over this style you'll be able to see the splatter paint spots.

On the small projects we used toothbrushes but that leaves a very fine droplet and it seems this would take a really long time to do a room.  What about using an old broom?

How will you keep the splatters off the ceiling?

  3. To avoid a nasty mess of a room, you should insist that she still give it a normal coat of paint and limit the splatters to complimentary colors. Using a professional splatter or stucco gun type of device would also help, they can be rented at some hardware stores but not many. Best of luck.

  4. take out all furniture first and put down drop cloths.  use a white base color and two or three complimentary contrasting colors:  perhaps blue, yellow and green, but not too deep.  just take a brush, dip and start slinging but aim carefully at the walls unless you also want it on the ceiling.  This technique made Jackson Pollock famous.
