She was prescribed steroids for this. She's only a year and this would be her 4th time on this drug. I'm wondering if anyone else's baby has gone through this and how he/she did witout the meds? What's the worst case scenario?

  1. Have you considered taking your child to a pulmonologist (lung specialist).  My daughter developed bronchiolitis at the age of six months and her pediatrician referred me to a pediatric pulmonologist that turned out to be an absolute God send.  Steroids caused my daughter to be very hyper--while she was taking them.

  2. First of all let me tell how how sorry I am my son has this and I know how scary it is. His first trip to the er was at 9 months, they gave him  breathingtreatmentss, and steroids. The breathingtreatmentss work for a little while. but honestly I don't know if the steroids do anything. My son is three now, and still has about two or three fits a year, usuallyy when he is sick form something else. It's always in the middle of the night, and it's always terrifying. Now I just sit up with him and wait for it too pass. It always goes away on it's own. Not that I would ever tell you to do that it just works best for us. I have found that by the time we get to the er and get in to see the doctor that's it's much better. I know if my son has a cold or allergies I give him a little benadryl before bed, this seems to help. Good luck!

  3. Try to find a pediatrician that also employs natural and holistic approaches to medicine.

No baby should be on steroids four times at one year of age!

    Find another doctor!

PS: If the baby ever gets to the point that she can barely breathe (from the croup) run a hot shower and close the door.  Let the baby breathe the steam, it will clear her air passages and allow her to breathe comfortably.

  4. Both of my kids have had croup, at least twice.  And both of them had steroids.  For my kids it was needed, both of their throats were closing up, and their oxygen levels were below 80.  And they tried breathing treatments before they got the steroids.  One time with my son, we were at the emergency room for 12 hours because of croup, in that 12 hours he had to have 3 shots of steroids.  Every time the steroid would wear off, his oxygen level would drop to about 78%.  It is very scary when your child can not breath.

  5. I would find another doctor, being on steroids four times at only a year old tells me either there is a problem that your doctor isn't revealing to you or else he is just "steroid happy".  Has she had croup all four times?  I have provided links that may be of help to you.

  6. Both of my children have had Croup and they have never had steroids for this problem. Best treatment to go outside if it is cooler outside, steam from hot shower, or cool mist humidifier. Sometimes the Dr. can give your child a breathing treatment at the office or for you to take home.
